Indeed, the British are once again numerous on post, especially to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the legendary Mini, together with the 60th anniversary of the oldest rally in the Belgian rally championship. Up front, it promises to be a very exciting battle at various levels.

Paul Lietaer with the Opel Manta 400

A battle between the Youngtimers is expected for victory in the Historic BRC. The West-Flemish classic can even count on a top affair, as all tenors are present. Paul Lietaer will be at the start with the Opel Manta 400 with which he became champion last year. The mustache has some catching up to do in Roeselare, where he severely damaged his Manta in an unfortunate crash on the Zoning last year.

Unpublished battle TER Historic vs HBRC

Competition comes from the fast Bjorn Syx, who was fastest in Ypres in June with his BMW M3. Syx will face opposition from two other BMW M3 drivers, Guino Kenis and Danny Kerckhof, and especially from the Ford Sierra's Cosworth of Dirk Deveux, 2nd in the championship, Stefaan Stouf and Frank Baert. And then there are the Porsches of former Historic Champion Glenn Janssens and especially Hans-Walter Schewe, the leader in the TER Historic, in which Syx and Kerckhof will also compete.

Fast Opel drivers Jens Maes, Stephen Vankemmel and Danny Vancoillie will probably have to reckon with the Escort's of two other TER Historic participants, Brits Tim Metcalfe, 2nd in the standings, and Vince Bristow.

Important stake with a double-header in the HRCR

Otherwise, we are curious to see where the British drivers of the Challenge HRCR Stage Masters and the Mini Sport Cup will position themselves. The latter, which celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Mini, brings the most cars to the start. No fewer than 17 classic Minis are expected in Roeselare. Among them apparently the best drivers of the HRCR, as Clive King, already 3 times winner in his category, leads the two rankings. After 3 races in the Stage Masters and 4 in the Mini Sport Cup, Peter Ellerby is also always in the running for the two "titles". In the Mini Cup, points are awarded by age category. Andrew O'Hanlon and Craig King also achieved 1st place in Class C where there is harder competition than in B.

Among the other makes, Paul Kendrick (Ford Escort Mk1 RS1600) is the most regular. He is 4th in the Stage Masters. Mike Barratt (Ford Cortina GT), Peter Lythell (Porsche 911) and Rikki Proffitt (idem) are hoping to pile up their first points of the year. As the previous heat of the HRCR, scheduled for early August in Scotland, has been cancelled, the drivers are all yearning for the start of this ConXioN Omloop van Vlaanderen. It will be a very important appointment for them as usually their races are only 30 to 60 minutes long against the chrono. The 199 km on the programme in the ConXioN Omloop van Vlaanderen is twice as long. Hence, this race in Roeselare will count for two: one race a day. So the stakes in Roeselare are high, especially as after this one-off outing outside Britain, there is only one more race on the HRCR calendar.

For completeness, we also mention that two Japanese teams will participate in the Mini Sport Cup for the first time. In short, the seventh round of the Historic BRC can count on a very strong, varied and international starting field. The battle among the classics will certainly be as exciting as among the modern cars.

Preliminary standings

TER Historic

1.
